What to expect in therapy

I primarily utilize a combination of talk therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with clients although I often incorporate skills from other helpful areas such as Family Systems and Attachment-Based theories.

Typically, CBT is considered a highly structured approach to therapy which I haven't found as helpful to the clients I work with thus leading me to instead utilize talk therapy with a CBT framework. This can vary by client but most commonly includes processing what issues client's are facing, identifying what is and isn't working, and developing coping skills to better improve their daily living.

I maintain a relaxed environment while providing education, skill building, and, hopefully, healing to clients with a collaborative approach.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD is a developmental disorder that affects the brain, primarily the prefrontal cortex, and impacts a person’s executive functioning causing them to struggle with tasks that can seem simple for others. Symptoms of ADHD typically begin in childhood causing individuals to experience learning challenges, anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and behavioral issues.

Since many young women develop coping skills to manage life with their symptoms, they can often “mask” ADHD symptoms and go undiagnosed longer, especially when they are high functioning. This masking can lead to women only realizing they may have an impairment later in life when faced with increased stressors such as school, work, or parenthood.

There isn’t a “cure” for ADHD but there are a number of immensely helpful treatments including therapy, skill building, and medications if desired.

As your therapist, I will work with you to address the areas you feel are causing you difficulties, obtain any assessments/diagnosing necessary, and develop a treatment plan together to improve your daily functioning. If you desire medication I am happy to assist you with finding a prescriber that fits your needs for medication assessment and treatment.

Perinatal/Postpartum Depression

A caregiver can face mental and emotional challenges from trying to conceive (or adopt) to post birth/adoption and everywhere in between. The changes a child can bring to a family can cause significant hormonal shifts as well as financial, social, and physical stressors. Some of the mental symptoms often reported are extreme sadness, loneliness, crying “for no reason”, irritability, uncontrollable worry and anxiety, and feeling down or hopeless. These changes can cause women to feel isolated and alone, out of control, and add to stress and undeserved guilt to an already challenging time.

The symptoms of perinatal and postpartum depression can vary in intensity and severity but luckily therapy and treatment can help. As your therapist I will work to support you in decreasing these symptoms, improving the care and support for you, and helping you manage your symptoms through this difficult time. Just because parenthood is often hard, doesn’t mean anyone should suffer through.

Everyone deserves to feel supported and cared for.
